Jayyous Town Jayyous Club Jayyous Schools Jayyous Mosques Jayyous Alms Committee
Jayyous town is located in the West Bank.
It is a new-fashioned town. It was established in the Roman Time and there is a
say that it was established by the foreigners who used to call it Largous or
Jayyous due to the large number of troops that concentrated in the town at that
time.
It is 16 km far away from Tulkarem to the south. It is a mountainous town on the Mediterranean Sea. It has a height of 320 m over the sea. In 1948, part of the town (what is called Jayyous Forest) was occupied and now known as Ra’anana Israel town. The town is surrounded by old wreckages and ancient locations. After the occupation in 1948 its current area has become 12,571,000 Sq.m. And recently, the rest of its land was taken over for the Ethnic Partition Wall. Its constructional area is 777,000 Sq.m. It is surrounded by olive trees and depends on agriculture and animals. It is well known all over Palestine for planting olives, fruits, and citriculture (lemon and orange).
Due to the occupation, the economic situation declined and it became difficult to export the citrus fruits to the Arab and West markets, which forced the farmer in this town to plant vegetables instead.
It has a population of 7500 people, 3250 of them are abroad. The town has three schools (preparatory school, a secondary school for boys, a secondary school for girls), kindergarten, cultural center, charity society and committee, municipality, two mosques, a health club, and other committees like lands defense committee and women committee. The town has the privilege of its educated youths who are holding high education certificates
Jayyous Municipality is a
new-fashioned municipality established in 1997. The town has a need for an
infrastructure and life necessaries. The city council is doing everything
possible to improve the standard of living especially under the occupation
umbrella, which is trying hard to destroy the town infrastructure. Jayyous
municipality lacks resources and depends on services from its participants and
outside assistance. Jayyous municipality has a burden to perform its service
duties to Jayyous people.
Currently, the municipality is making every effort to complete essential projects for the town such as building and asphalting internal roads, resolving the water problem after having the town’s wells taken away for the Ethnic Partition Wall, & obtaining transmission stations for electricity to provide 24 hrs service in various locations.
Jayyous council depends on election, each tribe is represented by one member and there are 9 members at the council
Jayyous municipality has achieved the following projects and provided many services for Jayyous citizens:
Building new schools (primary, secondary, and girls’ schools), which include study rooms, academic halls, and playgrounds.
Helping Jayyous Charity Society to build a site of 120 m2 that needs more support to be completed.
Asphalting the town’s internal roads of 3 km length in the first stage, and 2.5 km length in the second stage. Also, new-planted roads of 6.5 km length were opened. There is a financial approval to asphalt 4 km length road. A new building for the municipality has been completed with support from the Japanese government
Purchasing two generators to provide electricity for the town
Performing aerial snapshots to increase the structural planning of the town which come up to 534,000 Sq.m.
Increasing the water and electricity network
Obtaining a new car for waste transfer to serve the town an the surrounding villages
Building walls to protect roads and the soil from being washed out
There are so many other achievements such as building the mosque, helping Jayyous sports club by providing a land to build the site, paying the water and electricity loans, and obtaining material support to the needy citizens
Some of the recent problems that face the municipality are taking away arable lands and its water, and the tightness of the town structural area due to the occupation. Also, there is the problem of marketing the agricultural products due to the curfew and the closed roads between the residential houses
Jayyous Sports Club has been established since 1969 and it has provided sports, social, and cultural activities for Jayyous citizens.
Jayyous Sports Club and its
management have achieved distinguished successes
and improvements in spite of
the changes of its management during the last few years and the renewal of its
players due to their immigration. The club won the championship in Volleyball
and Basketball many times; four of its main players are part of the Palestinian
National Elected. The club members won Palestine Championship in Volleyball and
the last round was in 2003, knowing that they were engaged in 6 rounds this year
and won the 1st place for the 6th time in Jayyous or all
over Palestine. The team also participates in the clubs’ rounds in Jordan and
Iraq.
The town’s inhabitants whether residents or immigrants are interested to provide support to the club management and the players. More support provided by the town’s municipality, Jayyous Charity Society, and the town’s local organizations.
The football team won the 2nd place all over the town, and according to supervisors in the sports activities; it looks like the team is awaiting more successes along the way all over West Bank, keeping in mind the team’s simple capabilities. In order for the team to continue the required training, it will need more financial support and improvement in the current situation that the country face
Jayyous Schools has been
established in 1942 for girls and boys, it used to be up to the 4th
Grade and was called the “Return School”. Throughout the years, the school
expanded to include the secondary schools of Art (there is an effort to have the
secondary school of Science) and the girls’ secondary school. Each school has
its own name: the primary school is called “The Fundamental Jayyous School for
boys”, and the secondary school is called “Abdulrahim Omar Secondary School” in
relation to the famous poet Abdulrahim Omar who was born in Jayyous and who was
known for his poems, education, and literature. And the girls’ school is called
“Jayyoush Secondary School for Girls”. The students who are interested in the
Secondary School of Science complete their education in the neighborhood.
In 1994, a partition between the
primary and the secondary schools was completed. The school has provided the
students with a public library, advanced lab, and simple computer lab that
require some improvements. The primary school lacks various scientific needs,
the girls’ school was separated long time back and it is for Art section only.
Each school has teachers, supervisors, a secretary, and a principle
There is a meeting room and a clinic for the boys’ school. All schools have playgrounds and there are more than 700 male students.
The school obtains financial help from Jayyous inhabitants who live abroad and other volunteers to renew and maintain the school and to increase the classes in the school
Each school has parents’ council, a committee formed annually and meets on monthly basis and on emergencies, which work closely with the teachers to resolve students’ problems and schools’ needs. The various local organizations in town support the schools with their simple capabilities because they believe that the school is a social and an educational institute. It is important to mention that the schools are in need to expand for more classes to reduce the number of students in each class.
At the present of representatives from the Ministry of Education, representatives from the Educational Division – Qalqilya, & the principle of Abdulrahim Omar School for Boys (Mr. Wasfi Waked). The Ministry of Education organized the Volleyball Championship for the secondary school held on the playground of Abdulrahim Omar School for Boys in town.
